Quote
The unpredictable King of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn, who is suffering mass protests in Bangkok, has now been accused of breaking his sister’s ankles.

The shocking allegation was reported by Andrew MacGregor Marshall, the former Reuters bureau chief in Bangkok, in his subscription-only newsletter, Secret Siam.

Marshall, who is free to quote his Thai sources without fear of the country’s vicious censorship laws since he left Asia, reports that the king is alleged to have attacked his sister after she was knocked over by his dogs. Insiders claimed that he either jumped on her legs or beat her with a cane.

The assault was allegedly prompted after she confronted him over his plans to make his official consort a second queen, alongside his present wife, Queen Suthida.

He also seems to care more about his dogs than his country’s people.

What a plonker.

And you can still be sent to jail for "insulting" him?

Even with him being de jure mainly a figurehead, that doesn’t exactly stop him from being the biggest landowner and most powerful oligarch in the country due to his military and business connections. He doesn’t have the temperament to be anything less than a despotic glorified head of both the oligarchy and the Junta’s close ally in Thailand

I don't think that's an entirely fair read of the situation. The monarchy (especially de jure) is by no means a figurehead. Vajiralongkorn has been using his authority to shove junta men aside in favor of his own toadies and he seems by all accounts to want to go further than the junta in suppressing the populace. Calling him a figurehead gives him more credit than he deserves.

Of course it would be Sirindhorn who tried to argue against this and be assaulted by the sh!+stain of a king. Back in 1998 in Graduate school, a presentation on Thailand pointed out both how horrible Vajiralongkorn was and would be and how unpopular he was, and how awesome Sirindhorn was and would be. She is both extremely popular and extremely talented.* Not a surprise The Vag hates her and would do this. A smart anti-The Vag and anti-junta strategy would be supporting her ascension to the throne instead of trying to topple the entire monarchy...

*She’s also a lesbian, and this was mentioned in that 1998 presentation too.

Of course, one of the arguments against monarchy is getting a klutz like this on the throne.

During the month and a half in 2016 that Prem was Regent while Vajiralongkorn was "mourning" his father I remember there was some talk among the general public of maneuvering to have Sirindhorn take the throne instead. I'm sure it was never seriously considered within the Thai oligarchy, though.

His father actually was relatively competent and even once defended student demonstrators.
