Let’s imagine for a moment hat John Gregg did just 3% in the 2012 governor’s race and was re-elected  narrowly in 2016 by facing a weak opponent. He then wins the Democratic nomination in 2020. Who does he pick as his running mate and does he beat Trump?

President Donald Trump (R-FL) / Vice President Newt Gingrich (R-GA)
Governor John Gregg (D-IN) / Fmr. National Security Advisor Susan Rice (D-DC) ✓

The fact that he only won reelection narrowly is troubling, but 2020 was a very winnable election. He would probably pick Rice for federal and foreign policy cred and improves a bit from Biden/Harris' underperformance, if only because Newt Gingrich is on Trump's ticket.

He wouldn't win the primary so this what-if would've never happened even if Gregg was a two-term governor. John Gregg 2012 was solidly on the Democratic right-wing. He went more left making some 180-degree flips in 2016. You might as well have a what-if for Joe Manchin vs. Donald Trump. Sure, there's your election, but what happened to the Democratic Party for Joe Manchin to be the nominee?
