According to Politics1, while Thompson turned down a run for Governor, he is planning to make his intentions concerning the Senate race known later this week. Now Thompson has declined to run against Kohl for the seat in the past but the idea that he's addressing the issue again is interesting. If he was definetley not going to run, why would he bother to put off a statement until later in the week? Could he be seriously reconsidering?

If he runs, Wisconsin is in play.

Interesting.  However, it also said he was more interested in a presidential run.  Also, lets not forget that Herbert Kohl is a popular Senator; the race would certainly be competetive but this election cycle has a Democratic tilt to it.  Thompson's record as a Bush cabinet official would certainly be used by Democrats against him.  If he did run then I'd say: Kohl 52%-Thompson 47%.

He's obviously not running for U.S. Senate.  You dont announce your not running for Governor due to family reasons.  Just to turn around and run for United States Senate.

Did he say something about his family? I didn't catch that. If that's the case, though, why put off an announcement regarding the Senate race? This whole situation is pretty weird.

Yeah, here is a snip from the AP article...

"Former Gov. Tommy Thompson has decided not to seek the Republican nomination for governor of Wisconsin.

In a statement issued late Sunday, Thompson said his family did not want him to run and he thinks the GOP has a viable candidate in U.S. Rep. Mark Green of Green Bay."

You do raise a good point though.  Why would he announce he's NOT running on two seperate days?  Why not get it all out of the way in one press conference?

Ah. He didn't decline because of "family issues." It says that he did not jump in because his family didn't want him to run. Thompson could always say that they didn't want him to run for Governor.

The whole two different press conferences has left me thinking that he is at least considering it again not just because I want him to but because repeating that he won't run and at a seperate event is just stupid.

Family issues... Family reasons... Family doesnt want him to run... Same thing.

I was actually think the same thing though.  His family may not want him to run for Governor, because they want him to run for Senate.

Tricky, tricky...

The family saying they don't want him to run for Governor and family problems are two different things in my eyes. Regardless, here is another confusing twist...

He said he made the decision not to enter the race because of his "family's unanimous opposition against another campaign"

"I'd prefer he didn't run for any office," she [Thompson's wife] said this morning.

Kohl would still win in that match-up. Thompson vs Doyle would be another story.

Thompson would likely lose, but he would at least make it competitive.

I think he would beat Kohl, but it is moot, he isn't running.  He has some delusions that he could be President, and he isn't stupid enough to try and use the springboard for that run.

It would be interesting, but this late in the game, I see the odds of Thompson running highly unlikely.  If he did run, I think it could go either way, but I see the chances of the Governor running being slim at best.

We'll just have to wait and see.

'04 candidate Tim Michels is considering another run for Senate but that's not the main purpose for this update. Thompson is still refusing to rule out a run against Kohl, saying that the GOP must find someone to beat him.

http://www.weau.com/news/headlines/2840836.html

And when Thompson's former spokesperson was asked to comment, the statement was very simple but could be a sign of big things:

Thompson's former spokesman Tony Jewell told reporters to "stay tuned," adding that if Thompson were to run it would have been inappropriate for him to steal the limelight from Green.

If he is just playing around with us I will never want to hear this man's name again. He better be seriously considering a run.
