Not happening.  The grassroots of the Republican Party hate the poor and feel sorry for the “overtaxed” rich “job creators,” even as many in the party’s base aren’t particularly rich themselves.  Republicans will continue to receive many working class votes, obviously.

Any party that opposes free health care and welfare for the needy is not “the party of the working class.”

Working class, not welfare class.
Welfare reform and especially restricting health insurance access depresses the labor market.

a bunch of republican states like missouri and oklahoma have expanded public housing, medicaid, etc. as of late. definitely there's an element of middle class voters in party that are very anti-union and upset about their taxes or medical premiums or something. to say nothing of major donors. but the situation isn't exactly like it was a decade ago. i do see more serious in party fighting eventually down the line
