So I'm going to Europe this summer.  And I have a question for our European members.  What do you suggest for money exchange?  Should I gamble and try to get a good rate while I'm there, or what, and what are the good rates for England, France, and Italy?

First off, where abouts in Europe are you going? If you are only visiting those countries it depends where you visit first as France and Italy both have the Euro. At the moment you are only getting a tad over £0.50 per dollar, as the dollar is pretty weak at the moment and you get about 0.75 Euros to the dollar. It's probably best to watch the exchange over the next few months and wait for the dollar to rebound.

If you fly into Britain you can change your Pounds to Euros before you head ot the continent and vice versa. Just always keep an eye on the rates.

I just used my Debit/ATM card because I got a good exchange rate and my bank didn't charge a fee for it.

You might look into that and ask your bank.  But don't count on it all the time, it can be a mess if your card doesn't work somewhere and you don't speak the language (especially France and Italy where no one speaks English)

Aye, just use debit/ATM to get your money. You get the best exchange rate that way.

If you want actual cash before you go and don't want to just rely on credit or debit then I would suggest having your money exchanged at a bank here in the US before you go. Check the currency markets before you travel and go on a day when the dollar is performing better if you want a good rate. Go to a reputable bank, not one of those places at the airport that will do currency exchange or any other currency exchange place they usually give bad rates that cost much more than the world market rates.

Are you going with your family, on your own, or with a school group? Where are you going? Europe is not, as of now, a single country. Wink

Behave yourself while your over there, try and give Americans a good name, don't get preachy.

With a school group, and only England, France, and Italy (that order - that's why I wanted those exchange rates).  Specifically, fly to London, stay for a few days, take the EuroStar train to Paris-->few days-->EuroStar to Rome-->Florence-->fly home.

It's 10 days, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'll try to give Americans a good name - and I'll try not to talk politics w/ anybody (but if they bring it up, it's free game Tongue)

I hope you do. It will lose alot of your Misconspections.

Anyway enjoy your holiday. Though I must say Rome is quite possibly the most overrated city on Earth. (Though I haven't been Paris I must admit ever, Florence is lovely it must be said.)

Rome... I wanna go to Rome too!

Yeah, don't bother about money exchanges, travellers cheques etc. That's 10-15 years out of date. Heck, you don't even need that to travel in *India* anymore.
