I know this is a thread about Shua, but what the hell is happening to Averroes? He used to be one of the most thoughtful posters on here, but lately most (though definitely not all) of what I've seen from him is contrarian bullsh*t that seems more interested in showing he's Not Like Other Lefties rather than in the actual merit of a position. It's really worrying.

You're allowed to defend yourself from unfair and pointless attacks. I don't know how such a smart contributor can bother people here this much unless they intentionally misinterpret his posts.

Unfortunately, as time goes on "this poster's quality has declined" increasingly seems to be used as a substitute for "this poster has drifted in the wrong direction ideologically".

I'm deeply skeptical of both Shua and Averroes' alleged declines in posting quality.

As I said in my post, it's not about the particulars (I haven't been involved in every thread where Shua gets criticized for his views, though everything I've seen of him in the past year or so suggests to me that your characterization is deeply inaccurate), but about a general tendency. I'm just starting to get suspicious of people who are nominally opposed to the American right but, in the midst of a brazen authoritarian attempt to consolidate power of its part, seem to devote all their energy to criticizing the left over comparatively minor issues. I don't know if that's what you're doing, but from a few posts I've seen of yours, I think my worries are understandable.

I suggest that you have a discussion with me about whatever it is that bothers you instead of calling me a weirdo and inviting others to gawk.

I honestly can't tell if you're genuinely upset by this or if you're playing it up for rhetorical effect, but anyway no, I didn't mean to insult or mock you. My insults are always very direct and unambiguous, you'll notice. And nowhere did I call you a weirdo or invited anyone to do anything other than give their earnest assessment.

Wondering aloud about what's going on with a poster's attitude or takes in a thread where that poster is present (and can respond if they're so inclined and ignore it if they aren't) is something I've done before, and something I've seen other posters do (including to me, I'm pretty sure). If we were closer I obviously would have PMed you, but we're basically strangers even if we usually get along, so I decided to just put it out there. If this is something that bothers you so much, I'll avoid it in the future, but I'm not going to pretend I committed some great personal offense.
