In almost every poll, Trump is doing worse in the head to head with Biden than he has in his approval. As I am writing this, the RCP avg has his job approval at 45%, but his H2H numbers at only 43%. That 2 point difference is noteworthy IMO, and here are some possible reasons why:
1) Sampling errors, statistical noise, etc.
2) People who like Trump as President, but just want someone new.
3) "Shy" Trump voters who are afraid of saying that they will vote for him, but say they approve of him. IDK how that works out though.

What do you think? Is it just an error or is there something bigger happening?

Could it possibly be people who approve of Trump but aren't reliable voters? I guess they are RV as a minimum, which strikes out lots of people who like Trump but are disengaged from elections.

I can see some stereotypical Obama-Trump voter in Scranton or Wilmington both approving of Trump's performance and voting for Biden.

CNN 2004 exit poll had Bush approval-disapproval at 53-46 and in 2012 had Obama at 54-45. So, doesn’t seem to be uncommon for incumbent’s vote share to run behind approval (exit poll measurement error issues aside).

There used to be a segment of respondents who approved of everybody, though that segment has shrunk over the polarizing years, but yes there probably are some little old ladies who say they approve of Trump but won't vote for him.

Approval numbers are a tricky thing too as the verbiage and scale can vary from pollster to pollster.  If rate someone as "fair" does that mean you approve of the job they've done or politely aren't impressed with their work.

Probably not but there are probably some who would say they approve of him on the economy but wouldn’t vote for him.  I am borderline in that category.

The only politicians the Rs have defeated are Clintonites and Kerry, Gore in 2000 and Hillary in 2016 and of course John Kerry in 2004 whom was similar to Gore.

The Rs can't defeat anyone else, just like they failed to do with Obama in 2008, just like with Biden of 2020
