I had fun there, but only because my Laotian-American hotelier took us along to a very high end place way out of town for the local rich men - $25 for an hour!  There was little there for the tourist in the dowtown backpacker area - the place was just full of rich, smug, comfortable young Scandinavians.

Anyway Laos is a very quiet, sleepy, country, but doesn't seem particularly poor.
