What is it with Alaska politicians and planes?

First, U.S. Representative Nick Begich, along with House Majority Leader Hale Boggs of Louisiana, one of Begich's aides, and a pilot, were flying from Anchorage to Juneau, when the plane disappeared. The plane and the bodies of the 4 people on board were never found. This occurred October 16, 1972.

Second, U.S. Senator Ted Stevens, who was defeated for re-election in 2008, but who planned on waging a come-back campaign in 2014, died in a plane crash near Aleknagik, Alaska on August 9, 2010 as he was on his way to a fishing lodge.

Now this.

I guess partially because Alaska's geography essentially forces plane travel, meaning there are more crashes simply because there's a larger number of flights.

In much of Alaska, planes are the only form of transportation, and politicians on campaign typically have a schedule they are loathe to miss, so that sometimes makes them take chances they shouldn't. Also, like people in sports and entertainment, they have a certain degree of celebrity which makes it notable when something like this happens to them.
