Union, NJ sees a demographic change

In 1990, more than 60 percent of Union’s residents claimed some kind of European ancestry, according to data from the U.S. Census, and the town was more than 86 percent white. In 2010, the Census found that number had fallen to 53 percent, and 30 percent of the residents now identify themselves as black, 10 percent Asian and 15 percent Hispanic of any race.


School enrollment data show an even more dramatic change. Last year, 27 percent of students enrolled in Union schools were white, compared with nearly 49 percent a decade ago. For the first time in district history, black students now constitute the plurality, at 44 percent.

"Years ago, this town was 95 percent German-American," Mayor Joesph Florio said. "In the last several decades, we’ve seen a tremendous shift."

A lot of people are saying that some white cops are opposed to this because people want to live next to people like them. There isn't anything wrong with this but I'm not racist and am okay with diversity but a lot of people aren't. Demographic change is a thing in most of the country, especially the Sunbelt. The White % will continue to drop until the present iteration of American "whiteness" is ended in favor of a new definition that brings in some new group (most likely Asians).

I was thinking Asians because they are quite well off in many respects materially, but you also raise a good counterargument.

Well the black percentage is pretty stagnant nationwide and I believe slightly declining. There will be big growth for Hispanics and Asians.

Not sure why Hispanics just aren't considered "white" already with what a broad definition that is. They're generally not any darker than Italians or SE Europeans.

Never should have let all the Irish and Italians in, that's where it really started.

I know I'm in Canada so it's not representative of American trends, but the Golden Horseshoe (Greater Toronto Area and then wrapping around Lake Ontario all the way to the Niagara Falls USA border) has been getting way more Asian and less white over the last few decades. Both East Asian, South Asian and South-East Asian (including Filipino). #1 demographic is still caucasian but I'm not 100% sure it's a majority anymore. Black population is still less than 5% except for the city of Toronto.

People move around and people immigrate. That's just how it works, especially in North America in areas within 50 miles if big cities like Philly, NYC, Toronto, LA, et cetera.
