Sens. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis are duds. How does North Carolina like those two? I didn't like Jesse Helms' politics, but you would be drawn to listen to him.

Well let's see Tillis barely won in a wave year, and Burr ran in 2004 (and actually did much worse than Bush) and ran again in the 2010 mega tsunami, and faced a quite bad challenger in 2016

It's because Burr is from NC when it was a much redder state in 2004, easily won in 2010 because of the wave year, and in 2016 faced a terrible opponent. Tillis barely won in 2014, in an R wave year, in an R leaning state. NC tends to throw out incumbents pretty quickly;  lot of that has to dow ith how narrowly balanced the state is, and this means that most senators there don't really get a chnace to build up their name in the state, or become a top senator. Sad, especially considering how many people NC has.

Well Burr won on Bush’s coattails in 2004 and had the advantage of being up for re-election only in Republican years.  Tillis barely won in 2014, a very Republican year.

Carolinas whenever there is a wave have trended Dem, just like 2008. That's why Joe Cunningham in SC 1 and Harrison whom have upraised Graham and looks like Tim Scott can win.

Because both were elected exclusively in years that were terrific for their party.

As others have said, 2004, 2010 and 2014 were very good years for the GOP, and then in 2016 Richard Burr had a bad opponent.

I would say she was weak when she ran in 2008. What saved her was Dole attacks backfired/Obama/Economy crash.

Yes. I remember that being a big turn off. Dole's number ending up dropping after that. Both my parents ended up voting for Hagen after that.

Dole paid for an ad with a voice actor with the same voice and accent than Hagan saying there is no God.

Burr wasn't really considered a dud until this insider trading stuff, right? I mean, chair of the Intelligence Committee is a powerful position. Though he definitely isn't a high profile guy, he didn't seem to be a poor Senator. He's never been a Ted Cruz or Rand Paul type that tries to get the media's spotlight. He's definitely not a John McCain "maverick" type either, but I wouldn't say that makes him a bad Senator, just a standard Republican that specifically looked out for industries in his state (pharma, biomedical, tobacco, etc.).

This. Before Burr's recent scandals he was basically an inoffensive Generic R type, and in the years he ran that was enough.

Because NC Democrats throw up weak candidates.

Hagan excepted, this largely seems the case. That and good GOP years.

Jeff Jackson or Erica Smith might've been able to reverse this, but Schumer insisted on the guy that lost in 2010 for some reason.

Kay Hagan was basically the Democratic equivalent of Burr--i.e. inoffensive Generic D. Though obviously a far better person.
