https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/21/politics/fbi-hate-crimes-coronavirus/index.html

Quote
(CNN)Federal investigators are concerned about the potential for hate crimes against minorities in the wake of the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic, according to the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In a letter Monday to law enforcement officials around the country, and obtained by CNN, FBI Director Christopher Wray wrote that his agency remains "concerned about the potential for hate crimes by individuals and groups targeting minority populations in the United States who they believe are responsible for the spread of the virus."
Wray's letter also outlined other investigative priorities for the FBI, including countering fraud schemes, cyber criminals attempting to take advantage of innocent victims, and the hoarding and reselling of critical medical supplies.

The "potential" is understating it. It is rampant. It is disgusting and uncalled for. After 9/11 the Department of Justice actively combatting Islamphobia against Muslim and Arab Americans. There is no similar effort from the DOJ right now to protect Asian-Americans.

Why is there so little attention being brought to this issue? Yet you hear an earful about how "racist" you are if you criticize wet markets? The truth can not be racist especially when it comes to culinary practices that transmit diseases from animals to people.

Most Chinese do not have those eating habits. We can not hold all those individuals for the disgusting habits of a very few

It could literally happen anywhere.

There should be increased scrutiny against racism on Asian-Americans at this time.

Well, [in loud nasally voice] as a vegetarian I don't see much difference between getting meat from a wet market and getting fresh/live "normal" meat products in the US. The biggest difference is in the sanitary and food handling standards for the market and the employees that work there. And that is something I have no problem criticising the Chinese government and inspection authorities for, and contrasting it with the US, although obviously not Chinese culture or people.

That being said, even though they're pretty confident that COVID had a zoonotic origin, do they actually know it started at a wet market? I thought they had pretty clearly determined the Huanan Seafood Market was just the site of an early major breakout but that the transfer to humans happened earlier.

On the topic of the thread though, yes, the reaction to this has been awful in terms of prejudice and racism. It might just be my social group and location, but I've actually been seeing this aspect covered pretty widely, especially incidents of vandalism targeting Asian-owned businesses.

If you feel any animosity toward *the Chinese* at all, it can ONLY be directed at their government ... who almost certainly are withholding a lot, even still.  However, to treat Asian Americans a certain way because of this is the height of ignroance.

I mean, if you want to blame people for spreading coronavirus, white people in camouflage with that crappy skull decal should be beating each other up.

I do not consider the below article racist:

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/china-ground-zero-future-pandemic-180965213/

This was published in 2017. I showed this article and other sources to a discord server and someone literally stated, "well that is racist. We can wear Hazmat suits to protect ourselves."

No the entire world should not wear hazmat suits just because a few people love unsanitary  food practices. We can not take political correctness to extremes.

We should not call it the Chinese Virus. It puts millions of innocent people at risk for hate crimes.

The below is true:

Quote
“Trump did say Asian Americans are not to blame, but he hasn’t done anything beyond that,” said Matt Nguyen-Ngo, a fellow at OCA overseeing the group’s work on anti-Asian hate incidents. “It’s been a very lackluster response.”
The White House declined to say whether it had created a task force

But I hold Trump partially responsible for the rise in hate crimes towards Asian Americans.

More "hate crimes" according to the media

Anyway I guess its still vandalism so the vandal could still be legally and fairly prosecuted.(I wouldn't be opposed either as long as hate crime charges aren't brought on here)

I've long recognized you as a total idiot, but I haven't noticed racism to be part of your bag of tricks until now. Do you understand the difference between Asian Americans and the business and party elite within China?

Maybe this is just indicative of the very Asian bubble I live in, but I feel like a lot more attention (especially among Asians) has been given to the increase in hate crimes and everyday racism being faced by Asian Americans versus these debates about semantics and symbolism. Like even early on, there was a lot more panic about the economic consequences of racism (e.g. Asian neighborhoods and restaurants losing a s***ton of business) instead of what's the PC way to talk about China

I read about the racist attack in Sam's Club where a Latino young man slashed an Asian man and his kids because of Coronavirus. It was awful but then somebody in the comments linked photos of the victims from Asian media and as disturbing as they were, I'm glad I saw them. The attack was brutal and disfiguring, the words people use matter because they very easily manifest themselves into brutality.

Perhaps the key to reducing all of this is for everyone to treat other Americans like Americans.

And I do mean "everyone".
