Interesting to note that Coburn -- despite being an icon of modern conservatism -- was close friends with Barack Obama.

When asked by a Bloomberg reporter for his thoughts on then-President Obama in 2011, he replied:

Quote
"I love the man. I think he's a neat man. I don't want him to be president, but I still love him. He is our President. He's my President. And I disagree with him adamantly on 95% of the issues, but that doesn't mean I can't have a great relationship. And that's a model people ought to follow."

Something kinda touching about that, especially in today's hyper-partisan environment.

Yes, few people know about this. He was a very honorable man despite policy differences. I have always had great respect for him. He was one of those senators that even though you disagreed with him, you didn't question his motives. He just had a very different idea of what policy is best for the country.

Here's another quote from him re: Obama...

Quote
I'm proud of our country, that we elected Barack Obama. I mean, it says something about us nationally. You know, it is kind of like crowning your checker when you get to the end of the checker board. Here's another things that says that America is special: Barack Obama, President of the United States.

Kinda reminds me of:

Quote

“I can’t trust Obama. I have read about him, and he’s not, um, he’s an Arab,” the woman said, standing among a crowd of GOP supporters just weeks before the election.

“No, ma’am,” [then-GOP Presidential candidate McCain] said. “He’s a decent family man (and) citizen that ... I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what the campaign’s all about. He’s not (an Arab).”

Disagreed with Coburn a lot, but (unlike Inhofe & Lankford) I never really doubted the sincerity of the man's convictions. He always struck me as an honest person.

I'd be interested to see what sort of Senator he'd be in 2020. I honestly believe he'd be be one of the few conservative voices angry that Trump has increased the national debt to record levels - or that Trump spends millions traveling to his own golf resorts, spending tax payer money that turns into his company's profits.

But maybe I'm just naive. RIP regardless.

Unfortunately most other Republicans fanned these flames for the sake of power attainment.

I listened to those confirmation hearings, and Coburn's questioning taught me a lot about how to engage a congressional witness, make your points clear, and remain completely civil. It got me thinking about many of the issues he raised in that hearing in ways I hadn't considered before.
