Trump team positions Pence as the antidote to anti-Trump animus
The president’s campaign aides recognize Trump’s personality is a liability with the voters he needs to win over. That’s where Mike Pence comes in.

Hurray! An opportunity to point out all the ways that Mike Pence is also a terrible person who shouldn't be anywhere near the levers of power!

He's less toxic than Trump, though.

 Says who?

There are different types of offensive. While Trump is annoying and outrageously offensive, some gullible people are attracted to his false bravado and conman ways.

Pence is a weirdo Christian with the charisma of cardboard and somebody who scares the crap out of moderates and progressives because of his backwards views. He's easily as unlikeable as Trump in a whole different way.

He presents himself as bland whitebread which might be inoffensive enough for moderate suburban soccer moms.

I think people here are underestimating the degree to which Mike Pence has been viewed by the Right as a favorite son for a decade-plus now. Excellent voter scores from advocacy groups, strong faith background, well connected with donors, activists, and other members of the party. Running for IN Gov and his idiotic religious liberties bill was an attempt to give him governing experience to run for President in 2016. Some high profile conservative activists even made a hail mary attempt to get him to run in 2012.

Trump is wildly popular with nearly all conservatives but less so independents. It's not values that they disagree with him on, it's temperament (they don't punish or reward him for policy). So, you put in someone who is bland but holds the same wildly popular values, plus the appearance of sincerity in his beliefs due to his faith, and he's a slam dunk.

The real question is what his career looks like once Trump is out of office (whenever that is). Pence is great because he's a foil to Trump where Trump is weak but compliments Trump where Trump is strong. I doubt that Pence looks as attractive in the post-Trump GOP when he's standing by himself rather than standing next to the President. But based on the way he was groomed from 2006 to 2015, I could easily be wrong.

Yeah, that's probably the plan.

It's actually a great idea. When everyone he speaks to falls asleep, they won't be able to think about how much they dislike Trump.
