I certainly applaud Vizcarra for taking a constitutional stand against such a corrupt - and let's face it, criminal - bunch, but the situation is getting really serious.

The Fujimoristas in Congress do not acknowledge the suspension as legal, have just voted to suspend Vizcarra and are about to have Vice President Mercedes Araoz sworn in as President.

I can't see that ending well.

Wow, this is looking messy. I hope for as good an ending as possible.

It’s Latin America, nothing important or ultimately profound is going to happen. A million people in flag hats will protest, the country’s military will rumble about a coup, one faction’s leader will back off after the other offers a bribe, and everyone living in a sheet metal shack will care more about their personal and pressing economic situation instead.

Why don’t you go live in a shack instead?

Huh, I hadn't heard of that story at all. Pretty dismal situation.

Y'all know that I have a strong presupposition in favor of legislatures and against executives, but in this case, it seems that the President is following the spirit and letter of the Constitution and the Congress is not, so obviously I have to support the rule of law. And Fujimoristas are absolutely vile, of course.

Hopefully this is just theatrics and things will resolve themselves in due course with new elections.

I definitely agree with you (on the general point - especially regarding Peru’s...recent history with the executive branch - as well as in this particular case). There’s some trickery and constitutional/legal interpretation issues going on this one, however, as (to my knowledge) Vizcarra went about the confidence motion in an odd way (relating to the process the legislature followed in order to appoint a new justice to the constitutional court), and they actually voted to give him confidence during his dissolution speech. The constitutional court, however many justices it has at this point, will ultimately resolve the issue, although since the fujimoristas are now also apparently calling for early elections it might just be best to hold those and let the public sort it out.

Also Mercedes Aráoz has now resigned the vice presidency and with it the fake acting presidency. Also a guy threw a traffic cone at a fujimorista and #IThrowTheConeAtYou trended briefly on twitter.

Given the central family have been comprehensively disgraced over the past few years, will the Fujimoristas even really survive another election?

So, with the Congress dissolved and the VP resigning, who would take over if Vizcarra were to step down or die in office?

It looks like Vizcarra has the upper hand. Much of the government has condemned the actions of congress, and the military is firmly backing the president.

My understanding is that there aren't any real organized parties in Peru beyond the Fujimoristas. Most parties tend to be personal outfits created in the image of the presidential candidate of the day, and which collapse as soon as the election is over. I might be exaggerating but I think that's the case for most parties currently in Congress, at least.

I mean, I’m sure Fujimorismo will survive - as was mentioned, it’s the only really organized political party beyond personality vehicles and relics (despite the Keiko-Kenjinsplit). The question is will Keiko survive? And I think she will, in the sense of not being driven out of politics in disgrace, even if she does lose support among the population at large.
