Well, Peter Jackson won for Lord of the Rings...my opinion of Mel Gibson is primarily based on having watched the Patriot, so I'll admit to perhaps not being a good judge of his talents. He simply strikes me as someone with enough money to direct movies without having to be actually good at it and using the oppotrunity to "say things" rather than aiming for good movies.
But I guess he isn't much worse than most Hollywood directors.
