Remember when we were told this is xenophobic? Well, whether it is or isn't, it's good policy, and it's great that Biden has recognized this. Positions like this well make a lot of people who didn't vote for him in 2020 strongly consider him in 2024 if he is able to run.

Quote
President Biden will start turning asylum seekers back to Mexico as soon as next week under a reinstated Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" program — but will offer them the option to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: Under court orders, the president will officially undo a key immigration promise, which will force asylum-seekers to wait months in Mexico ahead of their immigration court hearings in the U.S. — as long as Mexico accepts them.

One difference from the program under former President Trump's administration: All migrant adults enrolled in "Remain in Mexico" will be offered the vaccine, although it can't be required, according to two government immigration officials.
It's unclear at what point in the process the migrants would be able to get their shots, whether before being turned back, when they return to the U.S. for their court hearing or at some other time.
The policy, formally called the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), will first be reinstated in El Paso and Brownsville, Texas, as well as San Diego, California, one DHS official said.

Well I disagree with using giving vaccines to foreigners but the rest of it is good policy.

If Americans won't take them, then they should be put to use somewhere. It's clear that about a third of Americans simply cannot by any means be convinced to get vaccinated, and most of those who want the vaccine have been vaccinated now.

Unless I'm reading the story wrong, this is only a "decision" by the Biden administration in the sense of "we have decided to obey the court's decision on the law" (something that was and remains sadly lacking from resident Donnie Dumb**** and his cult).

If we want to sell them to those countries maybe it’s fine. As long as the vaccines sold are the ones closest to getting spoilt.

Like other wealthy countries, America has a firm obligation to aid poor countries with vaccines as much as possible. A pandemic only ends globally. It's not just about saving lives - although that alone should be enough - it's even in our own interest as less virus spread decreases the likelyhood of dangerous mutations that may become problamtic due to immune escape. Let the Omicron variant be a warning, even if it turns out less concerning than expected. We're not living on an isolated island where the rest of the world doesn't affect us.

Lastly, such aid can also be used as soft power in counter to the PRC and Russia. The first reason is more important though.

Considerung low vaccine rates in many parts of the world, we and others such as Canada, Europe or Japan for sure haven't done enough.

Honestly, he should have defied the course and dared it to enforce their ruling. Republican administrations have openly flouted the law countless times, it's time to show them that two can play this game.

Why choose this ruling to ignore? Biden should use that political capital on bad healthcare rulings or anti LGBT stuff. You know, issues that actually apply to Americans.

What a gross response. Newsflash, just because someone isn't American doesn't mean they don't deserve basic human rights.

Newsflash, tens of millions of Americans have no healthcare which is a much more pertinent violation of human rights. I don't care if you find my response "gross", this would be an incredibly stupid issue to defy the courts on. I wholeheartedly agree that Republicans have used and abused the system for decades but one must pick their battles and there are far more important problems at hand.

Biden is correct in offering the vaccine and I'm very glad he's treating the border in a humane, Obama style manner here. Many of these folks are desperate for vaccines and countless selfish Americans won't get them.

Giving vaccines away for free or low cost is worth more dollars in economic activity in the long run. Mexico's economy contracted by 8% which is not good for us, since our economies are linked. The longer Covid-19 is allowed to circulate in the unvaccinated population of the world the more it threatens our vaccinated population and therefore our economy. The United States should be doing everything it can to distribute vaccines with global partners.

Not only that Mexico turning into a place where Corona can freely mutate is bad for everyone, honestly I support rich country funding every vaccines for everyone, because it’s in the end good business to end this epidemic.

If you want to end the epidemic, and you’re worried about it mutating abroad, just close the borders and pause incoming travel. Worked for China.

At the current stage, there's no longer a shortage of vaccines anymore. That was issue during the first months of this year. All major countries have drastically ramped up production so that there are millions and millions additional doses.

If you want to end the epidemic, and you’re worried about it mutating abroad, just close the borders and pause incoming travel. Worked for China.

Just "closing all borders" is not even possible. Not just would that cause severe economic problems that directly affect jobs and consumers inside a country, no government can deny their own citizens a return. The pandemic can only be tackled successfully on a global level.

The court ruling was great for Biden, he can place the blame on a Trumpist judge for a secure policy which helps limit the border surge.
