I just watched it tonight. Weirdly though, it wasn't about a hack, which is odd given the title. It was actually about a bunch of attention-seeking neanderthals posting their personal information on websites that charge them no fees whatsoever, and then acting shocked when their data was sold to third parties (despite agreeing to terms and conditions that said that would happen). They then tried to frame Facebook ads as an existential threat to democracy, as if western democratic ideals could be taken down by an algorithm that can be thwarted by installing a free AdBlock plugin.

Anyway, I'm now more convinced than ever that Cambridge Analytica is a Freedom Company. If you get your news from Facebook ads, don't be surprised when people lie to you. You deserve to be manipulated if your opinions are really that malleable.

Sure, if you only think to the first level of harm, but negative externalities (which have always been the bane of libertarianism) to misinformation exist, especially in a democratic environment.

Cambridge Analytica did nothing wrong (although some of their staff are repugnant people).

So far I can only see a positive externality: Everyone's fed up with democracy now.

Democracy = voting for your preferred elites.

Fed up with democracy = simply wanting your preferred elites to rule with an iron fist.

Assuming your observation is true, which I am not confident of, this is not a step forward.

What this incident ought to make us question is our system of free "expression" that allows for the use of misinformation tactics on a mass scale.
