Imagine if we got back to the days of appointing the most brilliant jurist instead of partisan hacks who were brought up in a "farm system" to be molded into the perfect conservative justices.

RIP to a real freedom fighter! Though I must say, his longevity has given me hope that Breyer and Ginsburg could survive Trump's presidency after all...I hope I didn't jinx it!

A Massive FF.

Douglas, crippled by a stroke, was pushed to resign, and was extremely bitter about it.  It wasn't so much because he resented Stevens (who was a lifelong Republican from the University of Chicago Law School) as much as he resented Gerald Ford, the President who appointed Stevens.  Douglas never forgot Ford's abortive attempt to impeach Douglas in the early 1970s.  (Ford was doing Nixon's dirty work, but that didn't matter to Douglas.)

Stevens was never expected to be the liberal he turned out to be, but neither was Harry Blackmun.

Clinton was a moron for appointing justices already in their 60's in 1993 and 1994. Federalist Society hack Clarence Thomas was appointed in his 40's and could still be around in the 2030's.
