To my knowledge, while there have been candidates who have applied to run in the next general election, no one has applied to run in the Council Special election  itself to my knowledge.

So if you are in Lincoln and want a try at running the government in the region, go ahead and file your papers to run, then create a thread with your campaign!

You may declare your candidacy here:
https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=272627.1325

Note: Not sure if the filing deadline expires tonight at midnight EST or yesterday, but even if it's closed you should still file to be accepted as a write-in candidate if we only get a write-in by-election.

If the council stops working 72 hours before the general election, that would make the councillor elected in a special election working only 1 day before council is dissolved.

Councillor for a day! Sounds exciting I guess Tongue

Tbh I would expect the people who are running in the general from next week to run, but apparently not. That would give us a "3 candidates for 3 seats" election instead.

Problem is that the new rules basically forced a shrinkage of the council to about 5 candidates.

By the tracker MB put last week, plus the declaration of Pyro, we now have 9 candidates, which means a 7 member council. And unless Ninja is making a comeback or the Feds are conceding the Council, I would expect at least 1 more declaration

I found it odd that there was a special election one week before a general election as I remembered maybe there was a rule put so it would not happen. I have not found that rule so maybe it was pre-reset or pre-Philadelphia constitution.

But I found reading the constitution on the wiki, section 7 of article V:

Quote
Except in December, all elections for governor, Council, and federal Senate shall begin on the penultimate Friday of the given month. In December, all elections shall begin on the second Friday of the month. All special elections for governor and by-elections for Council shall begin on the second Friday following the creation of the vacancy to be filled; but if the vacancy shall occur on a Thursday, the special election shall begin on the third Friday following the creation of the vacancy.

It says the election is on the second Friday following the vacancy. When the vacancy occured?
If it's when people swear in to a new office, then it happened Friday July 5. The second Friday after July 5 is July 19. So maybe we don't need a special election for only one day of sitting in the assembly.

Well, you could make an argument that the first friday was July 5 itself while the 2nd Friday was July  12. In general I would prefer to fill vacancies as soon as possible although this may lead to an unnecessary election

For July 12 it would have said the next Friday following the creation of the vacancy if the vacancies were created July 5.

Don't think if the vacancy occurs on a Friday that Friday counts as the first Friday since we have to count two Fridays following the vacancy.
