In 2000, the nomination of the conservative Governor George W Bush of Texas as the Republican Presidential nominee, and his selection of the equally conservative former Defense Secretary Dick Cheney of Wyoming for Vice President, does not sit well with Arizona Senator John McCain.

McCain considers this ticket to be "too far to the right, and out of the mainstream of American society and thinking."

The more moderate McCain decides to launch an independent candidacy for President, based on "a moderate approach to governance."  McCain is able to persuade  former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin of New York, well known as a Democratic moderate, to become the Vice Presidential candidate on the ticket.

The Democratic candidates are Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee and Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.

However, there is one more twist to this election.  Old line liberal Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts believes the Democratic ticket "does not represent the true values of liberalism and compassion," and makes an independent run for President.  Kennedy persuades former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, a champion of liberal causes, to come out of retirement, and run with him as the Vice Presidential nominee.

Democrat, Vice President Al Gore, TN/Senator Joe Lieberman, CT
Republican, Governor George W Bush, TX/Fmr Defense Sec Dick Cheney, WY
Independent, Senator John McCain, AZ/Fmr Treasury Sec Robert Rubin, NY
Independent, Senator Ted Kennedy, MA/Fmr Governor Mario Cuomo, NY

Thank you.

Based on these results, on a straight party line vote in the 107th Congress, which was in office on Jan 3/01, the House would have elected George W Bush as President and the Senate would have elected Joe Lieberman as Vice President.

I think the center-right McCain would take more votes from the conservative Bush than the extremly leftist Kennedy would take from the center-populist Gore. McCain has a strong record, more experience than Bush, and is easily a better talker. He'll win over a good chunk of Bush's base. Kennedy on the other hand is seen as an eccentric liberal loon, he has a lot of questionable votes in his senate record and a lot of out of senate problems. center-left voters will pass and take Gore. In the end, this gives Gore the boost he needs to win. Kennedy does poor in Midwestern states while McCain does exceptionally well. Gore wins Ohio and Indiana due to the vote split.

FINAL:

Gore/Lieberman - 45% - 271 EVs
Bush/Cheney - 36% - 217 EVs
McCain/Rubin - 13% - 38 EVs
Kennedy/Cuomo - 6% - 12 EVs
