If he doesn't win 2020 outright, the dude is, unfortunately, locked out from higher elected office due to Indiana being a red state. He'll need the VP spot or cabinet appointment to remain relevant for future election cycles. VP spot is only happening with a woman on top of the ticket. He's been suggested for HUD a couple of times in this forum, but why not the State Dept? Mayor Pete speaks 8 languages and served in combat. Even though he has no diplomatic experience in govt, he's a very smart man who would quickly learn the job. He'd be a fine pick for any Dem prez (Biden, Sanders, Harris, O'Rourke, Warren,...). Would also be an interesting path to the Oval Office (from mayor to SoS).

Being multilingual does not make a small-city mayor qualified to run the country's state department.

Unsurprisingly I agree, but I don't think the language thing is a great argument for that Tongue It just shows a sort of thirst for knowledge and intelligence which I'd consider good qualities, and in a much deeper way it shows a reaction many marginalized groups have to their situation- overachieving. Jews had that in Europe and Russia, for example, and LGBTQs have that too. While everyone around him was falling in love, Pete didn't have that. To feel worthy, he needed to do better than them.

I'd want him as Secretary of State for several reasons- first, he's clearly competent and personable, so that by itself would make him a good candidate for that. He'd also be a good manager for the Department of State, as he was already a great manager for his city. And, if the next President wants to truly affect positive change worldwide on LGBTQ issues, a gay SoS would be amazing. One of my dreams is seeing a LGBTQ, as President or VP or SoS, visiting places like Saudi Arabia and Russia- and they won't have a choice.

I don't support Buttigieg for President, but would be okay with him serving in a cabinet position for President Sanders, Warren, Yang, or Gravel. I disagree, however, that he has no shot at higher office in Indiana. Kansas is a red state and elected a Democratic Governor last year); West Virginia elected a Democratic Governor in 2016 at the same time it voted Trump+42. Meanwhile, Vermont and Massachusetts have Republican Governors. Buttigieg could run for Governor of Indiana (which most recently elected a Democratic Governor in 2000; not ancient history), or a House seat, if not the Senate in the distant future.

Does he really have a foreign policy? I haven't been able to find a whole lot of a vision from him.

The Kansas GOP dug their own grave, and West Virginia has deep ancestral ties to the Democratic Party comparable to New England's long history of electing moderate Republicans. Neither model is applicable to Indiana, where the state GOP is largely competent and has had been the dominant party in Hoosier politics since the Civil War. The rural voters in Southern Indiana who were the foundation for Evan Bayh's statewide wins and who gave Donnelly a narrow majority in 2012 are now either dead or solidly Republican, and while the Indianapolis suburbs are slowly trending left, it's not happening fast enough to make electing a Democrat statewide remotely plausible for at least the next decade (barring a truly massive scandal). Suggesting Buttigieg could somehow win his Safe R Congressional district is even less believable. I'd love to see Governor Pete as much as any liberal Hoosier, but it simply isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Yes, it's either a serious cabinet post or nothing. HUD is essentially a minor, dead end job.

So is Mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

I'd be fine with it. Yes, it would amuse me if he travels to countries Saudi Arabia or so and they just have to take him. I have little doubt he'd be up to the challenge. Mayor Pete is a smart guy and would devote all his energy to the job.

I think a better position to start with, however, would be UN Ambassador. Take some more experienced man or woman for the first four years and then name him either secretary of state or, if a President Biden only serves one term, the 2024 running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Lol. Buttigieg would get trounced by Holcomb.
