Why are African Americans socially conservative?

I’ve seen a fair number of people say that Mayor Pete wouldn’t win the Black vote because he is gay and African-Americans are too socially conservative. While I’m not sure I buy that logic, why is it that African Americans tend to be socially conservative? Does it have anything to do with Black Protestant Churches? Or something else?

Education/income level correlations probably explain most of it. I'd imagine that educated African-Americans are probably about as socially liberal as their white counterparts.

African Americans are actually only slightly more socially conservative than white people.

The question you mean to ask is: why do the half of Blacks who are socially conservative vote Democrat anyway?

Black people aren't any more socially conservative then other races, it's just because 90 percent of them vote democrat. This means there will be African Americans of all political ideologies, liberal to conservative voting democrat mainly because republicans are racist to them while most white conservatives vote republican and white liberals vote democrat.
