Somehow, Asian-American Senator Hiram Fong of Hawaii snags the Republican nomination. If you really want an explanation, say Romney sticks around long enough to build a powerful Never Nixon movement, destroying him in the process. All other obvious candidates implode for one reason or another. So how does the general election play out?

Interesting! From what I've heard, Inouye was seen as a cheerleader for Taiwan as a senator. Makes me wonder if a Humphrey-Inouye presidency would have even reached out to China, which would alter the course of history pretty significantly.
