Any ideas what happened here? It's rural and white.

Trump won here in 2016 and Romney won by 6 in 2012. Obama only barely managed to win it in 2008 despite winning statewide by like 17 points. Before  that is had always voted GOP by double digits since 1964

Yet this year Biden won by 6 points (52-46)

This is in the Traverse City area, which is pretty much the wealthiest area upstate in Michigan. Lots of SE Michigan transplants retire to this area and in general they seemed to me (when I was little we used to go to this area a lot) to be very proper. It’s not that surprising it would swing against Trump specifically but still vote for James and other Rs downballot. It will probably swing back R in 2024 if I had to guess.

I had my eye on this (and Grand Traverse) as a potential flip before the election. Demographically, it's just a Colorado Rockies resort county but in the upper Midwest.

College education 42.8%.  That all you need to know

Kalkaska county on the other side of Grand Traverse has a college education rate of 11.9% and voted 70-28 for Trump

I was doing some digging around and found out that this county has the highest % of homes valued at over a million dollars in the state. Democrats have tended to do well in more expensive areas.
