The majority of these candidates have a decent amount of baggage that could hobble them, but I still think most of them could conceivably beat Trump.

MOST BAGGAGE
Tulsi Gabbard - 10
Richard Ojeda - 8
Joe Biden - 7
Elizabeth Warren - 7
Cory Booker - 6
Kamala Harris - 6
Kirsten Gillibrand - 6
Bernie Sanders - 5
Julian Castro - 2
John Delaney - 2
LEAST BAGGAGE

Tulsi Gabbard's history of anti-LGBT views might end her candidacy before it gets off the ground.

Richard Ojeda voted for Trump, and that would be a non-starter for many Democrats, despite a platform many would find easy to support otherwise.

Joe Biden has a propensity for putting his foot in his mouth - his remark last year about millenials will be played over and over again and will hurt him with a demographic he would need to turn out for him. That, and he's made plenty of conservative moves over the course of his career. He also has two previous failed runs for president. Like Sanders, Biden's age will be a factor that may play against him, though it might not matter as much as it would in previous elections.

Elizabeth Warren would be ranked below Cory Booker in terms of baggage, if not for the DNA test controversy.

Cory Booker's past defense of Bain Capital will come back to haunt him if he runs, but isn't as fresh in voters' minds as Warren's DNA test controversy.

Kamala Harris will have to endure scrutiny from progressives regarding her years as Attorney General of California.

Kirsten Gillibrand will have trouble running convincingly as a progressive due to her more conservative-leaning past.

Bernie Sanders is arguably in a better position to run than in 2016 - the "democratic socialist" label has less stigma to it these days and he already has a large base of support and name recognition - more than any candidate on this list besides Joe Biden. That said, there are still Democrats who would refuse to support him, partially because they believe he damaged Clinton's campaign. Like Biden, Sanders' age will be a factor that may play against him, but less than it might in previous elections.

Julian Castro doesn't seem to have much baggage, but he isn't that widely known yet.

John Delaney doesn't seem to have much baggage either, but he has the least amount of name recognition on this list and probably won't get more than 1% of the vote in Iowa before dropping out, if he makes it that far.

10 as the worst, 1 as the least

10: Tulsi Gabbard (she's toxic and it's clear)
9: Joe Biden (he's a legitimate contender but he has a long record and a record that a good number of Dems would probably take issue with as it gets more coverage
8: Sherrod Brown (the spousal abuse claims are a legitimate issue
7: Beto O'Rourke (The DUI and whatever else is out there is an issue)
6: Kamala Harris (her record has some checkered moments, especially around SF matters and criminal justice but she can overcome it)
5: Michael Bloomberg (he was basically a Republican, and stop and frisk is an issue too)
4: Eric Holder (Not well known and not really a contender but I know he has some baggage)
3: Cory Booker (not sure about his relationships with women and what else is out there)
2: Elizabeth Warren (the native american issue is the only baggage I'm aware of)
1: Bernie Sanders (he's been vetted but he's not perfect)

O'Rourke's DUI (which is news to me to be honest) probably won't have much impact and likely won't be an issue outside of people who already weren't going to vote for him.

Bloomberg has some sort of fraud investigation (someone posted, can't remember who)

Warren was a Republican as recently as 1996 (Clinton being a Goldwater girl came up a lot, imagine what'll happen in Warren's case) and there was the fact that she actually claimed for decades to be a person of color (and if I read an article from a few years ago correctly, tried to use it to get hired to a university position seeking a minority.)

10 = disqualifying in a d. primary baggage, , 5/6=not insignificant but not toxic, 1=no baggage to speak of

Also this has nothing to do with how much I personally prefer the candidates, I dislike a lot of the ones down towards the bottom and like Ojeda and Warren

Richard Ojeda - 10 - voted for trump
Tulsi Gabbard - 9 - assad
Joe Biden - 7 - creepy joe, millennials, anita hill, crime bill, Iraq, etc etc
Elizabeth Warren - 7 - DNA rollout
Sherrod Brown - 6 - abuse claim that has been refuted before
Kamala Harris - 5 - separating families, steve mnuchin, etc
Bernie Sanders - 5 - jane sanders, sexual harrassment in campaign
Cory Booker - 4 - bain capital
Kirsten Gillibrand - 4 - blue dog
Beto O'Rourke - 4 - blue dog
Amy Klobuchar - 2
Julian Castro - 1 - hasn't done anything ever
John Delaney - ? - based on how conservative he is, i'm sure he has some skeletons, i just don't know of any

There are so many potential candidates that I am only going to count the declared ones so far:

Gabbard, Warren, Gillibrand, Ojeda, Castro, and Delaney in that order.

Tulsi Gabbard - 9
Richard Ojeda - 9
Joe Biden - 7
Elizabeth Warren - 7
Kamala Harris - 7
Cory Booker - 6
Kirsten Gillibrand - 5
Bernie Sanders - 5 (not something in particular, but age, history of competing in 2016, four years nationwide recognition and his progressive brand is also baggage)
Beto O'Rourke - 4
Amy Klobuchar - 2
Julian Castro - 2
John Delaney - ?

In comparison, Clinton's baggage level in 2016 was probably 8+, maybe also 9. But Trump's baggage level was 7+ too, maybe also 8-9.

Most Baggage
10. Biden - Creep, also can't keep his mouth shut and has every quote-from-the-90's issue Hillary did.
9. Sanders -Rape essays, allegations of sexist campaign, everything we already know.
8. Gabbard - The view that she's too pro-Trump. Assad, FoPo stuff doesn't stick without tie to DT.
7. Ojeda - Brain damage, voted for Trump.
6. Harris - There's some trans stuff from her past, probably a lot of stuff from her prosecuting.
5. Booker - A loser and you can tell nearly immediately.
4. Beto - Pansy.
3. Warren - The DNA Stuff is a little tired, but she spent a long time thinking like a Republican.
2. Castro - His name is Castro.
1. Delaney - Who knows/cares.

Most Baggage to Least Baggage:

Biden: 10 - Off the richter scale baggage, Creepy old man, Obama baggage, 30 years of public statements and record to go over, Iraq, Crime Bill, bit of a neocon, Talks a lot and tries to out Trump Trump which does not work.

Sanders: 9 - allegations of sexist campaign, 3 mansions but is a socialist, Pro Gun views, Anti Immigration views in the past, seen as not doing enough for Hillary.

Gabbard: 8 - Not viewed as a TRUE democrat, Hillary hater, Assad, viewed as pro Trump, anti LGBT which ticks off the base.

Elizabeth Warren: 8 - DNA test, previous views has flip flopped, elitist/Hillary comparisons.

Kamala Harris: 7 - Home wrecker, too corporate/limousine liberal, career politician

Gillibrand: 7 - Phony, changed positions a lot.

Booker: 7 - Corporate ties, elitist, smug

Beto O'Rourke: 7 - Viewed as too moderate to the socialist base, DUI, elitist charge, light weight.

Ojeda: 5 - Voted for Trump, doesn't seem like a democrat the way the party is now.

Adding Harris to the list, she would probably be placed between Warren and Gillibrand.
