Cause she's controversial, and Rs enthusiastically voted against her. But...she got 60% and the township map was pretty blue, it doesn't matter all that much.

She is absolutely hated by Republicans in the state but at the same time not universally loved by state Democrats. The feeling that she was not interested in being Senator  was probably also a factor.

The underperformance looks worse than the margin considering 3 percent went to an Indy wife beating Trumpist.

In terms of absolute percentage, Warren did basically the same as Hillary. Warren got 60.41% to Hillary’s 60.01%. I don’t know Diehl (or Ayyadurai fwiw), but I assume he wasn’t as bad as Trump.

Diehl was pretty Trumpy but I don't know how much awareness people had of his personality or positions.

Trump was uniquely bad in Massachusetts, Warren's performance was more along the lines of Obama 2008, which is still pretty good.

She did worse than Ed Markey in 2014.  She underperformed.

I'd really like to look at the performances of Senators who just coast, running no TV ads, not campaigning etc. to ones who do. Klobuchar ran a bunch of ads and it paid off for her and so did Chris Murphy and he had nothing to prove. Gillibrand did the same as Warren phoning it in but she didn't seem to underpeform at all.

Well, Gillibrand also had an opponent who was totally phoning it in. She would not have massively overperformed the way she did if the Republican had actually tried (though she'd still probably have done better than Cuomo, who has some difficulties in multiple directions that Gillibrand does not have).

Really? It is virtually unheard of for a winning Democrat to lose any county in Massachusetts (not counting 2012, when Brown lost by ~8%). Warren was the only statewide Democratic victor in 2018 to lose a county. Keep in mind that Democrats have swept Massachusetts's counties in every presidential election since 1992.

Interestingly Massachusetts was the only New England state Clinton carried all counties in.

Among incumbent Democrats running statewide, she did by far the worst, running under the second weakest by 8 and the average by 15. None of them ran very active campaigns either. The primary culprit is simply that people don't like her and don't want to vote for her, to a degree stronger than any other 2020 contender.

This is what Democratic presidential candidates have gotten in Massachusetts every election since 1996, working backward from 2016:

60.01%
60.67%
61.80%
61.94% (Kerry)
59.80%
61.47%

Warren got Presidential numbers rather than Massachusetts Democratic senator numbers. That's all.
