On Election Day, it looked like GOP Rep. David Valadao had escaped with a victory by roughly 4,000 votes in California’s 21st District, where three-quarters of the population is Hispanic and Hillary Clinton paced President Donald Trump by 16 points in 2016.

But two weeks after the election, his lead has dwindled to 447 votes over Democratic challenger TJ Cox after a batch of uncounted ballots in Democratic-leaning Kern County was reported

Nate Silver predicted on Twitter Monday that the final margin of the race could be within 100 votes.

Nate Cohn tweet "CA21 shaping up as a total embarrassment for the networks/ap. getting the initial call wrong is bad, but not being able to see this coming in the post-election night returns is a true failure"

What is happening in the district and were the network has called this race prematurely?

Definitely, it's weird that lots of the media haven't at least retracted the call. Maybe they're sticking with it for integrity purposes but if Cox ends up winning it'll be pretty bad for their reputation.

I believe none of them are willing to retract their because of the chance that Valadao could still hang on. That would be embarrassing for them to pull the call from Valadao, then declare his victory for a second time if the ultimate outcome doesn’t change.

They definitely jumped the gun on several calls. They also called AZ SOS for Gaynor, who eventually lost.

And NM-02 and GA-07 where they called the wrong winners. There's been tons of missed calls this election. For some reason they were really trigger happy this time, which is strange since if anything I remember them being overly cautious in past years.
