Schuette loses by 15-20 points.

Period. Period.

Oakland County, a GOP fortress will go for James over Stabenow, though.
LMAO

This is the third time in 9 months that Bronz has called a Clinton County a GOP fortress. Put him on ignore if you already haven't people.

How will I laugh at and relentlessly mock his posts if I have him on ignore?

Whitmer spent yesterday in churches in Detroit, a UAW hall, and then a bar in Ann Arbor.

He's the guy who thought the Rs were going to win a 75% Clinton state legislative district in the Bronx. I don't know why you don't have him on ignore already.

I don't have him on ignore because I need some comedic relief on this site sometimes, and he's a great source for it.

What do we think about the chances the Democrats have to take back the House or Senate here. Not necessarily looking for someone to tell me they have good odds. Just looking for an informed analysis.

Michigan voted for Whitmer (D) for Gov (53-44 over Schuette) and for Stabenow (D) for US Senate (52-46 over James); the US Senate result was closer than I expected.

MI also flipped 2 US House seats from R to D: the 8th (Elissa Slotkin defeated Mike Bishop) and the 11th (Haley Stevens defeated Lena Epstein, to replace Dave Trott).

Michigan also voted to legalize marijuana, for a redistricting commission, and for easier voting.

The demographic shifts that took place between the 2012 and 2016 Presidential elections remained largely intact in 2018: Macomb went about 11-13 points more Republican than Oakland in both the Gov and US Senate races (even though the GOP US Senate candidate was a Black Republican living in Oakland County); Bay County (formerly a Dem stronghold) voted about the same as Kent County (formerly a GOP stronghold); Washtenaw County voted more Dem than Wayne County in both races.

How would redistricting look like? Will the commission be in charge of legislative lines too?

Michigan Republicans shifting power to oversee campaign finance-related matters to an FEC-like "bipartisan" commission (so new Democratic SoS can't do it). Important to keep in mind here that the actual FEC is more or less a failure by design, which is probably why the Republicans are replicating it. They are also passing a law to give the legislature the ability to intervene in lawsuits against state law now that the AG is a Democrat.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/11/29/bill-would-allow-legislators-intercede-any-court-case-involving-state/2150818002/

So that is both Wisconsin and Michigan looking to limit the power of the executive branch now that they no longer have control. Plus I guess North Carolina again wrt to election boards, but they do this every year so it's hardly news.

wait to be clear the Michigan SCOTUS is 3-1-1 right?
Basically 3 liberals and 4 republicans but one of the republicans was a relative moderate who will probably strike down the bullsh**t portions?

I don't even know if they can. The worst that might happen is that maybe they slip up and create what is essentially an executive branch body but give the Governor no control over it, which by my first read seems possible, unless their legislation lets the Governor pick CF commissioners from a list of candidates the parties submit.

Also I'm not sure to what extent the legislature can "intervene" in lawsuits either. That might encroach too far on the AG's powers. We'll see.

The upside to this, if there is any, is that if they screw the first versions of these power grabs up and they do get struck down, then it means they can't do it again, since Whitmer will veto or force it to be so watered down that it doesn't accomplish what it originally set out to do.

Some of this was posted elsewhere, but:

They are also trying to undo the voting rights amendment by changing AVR and notably same-day registration, by moving the deadline from election day to 14 days before the election, which is.... not same day registration. Interesting that they are trying this despite the constitutional amendment clearly saying the "deadline" is election day (aka no deadline).

There are other power grab bills. We'll have to see which, if any, Snyder vetoes:

https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2018/12/07/michigan-lame-duck-bills-violate-constitution/2224333002/

Probably going to be a lot of lawsuits in 2019, that's for sure.
