Suburban college educated women who were just fed up and saw Stewart as just a bridge too far, and were able to vote for a inoffensive moderate like Tim Kaine.

But it makes the most sense to me. Kaine won counties (i.e. Stafford, Chesterfield) that Northam lost last year, and his margin of victory (16% vs 9%) and overall percentage (57% vs 53%) were both higher. There had to have been at least some Trump/Gillepsie voters who went for Kaine, to account for those gains. Some of it, I'm sure, was also new or first-time voters.
