Ironically, Desantis may have beaten Murphy to take his seat in 2016, while he could've taken the Governor's seat in 2018 over Gillum.

He would've been able to stay relevant in politics while simultaneously distancing himself from Trump had he stayed true to his original plan.

That's a gamble because it's never guaranteed he would have gotten the nomination for governor. He very well could have lost to Adam Putnam. It's doesn't matter though because I'm sure Desantis will win in November especially after the debate.

I think he doesn't regret it at all. That said, he would've won easily.

He is deliriously happy because senator is a better job than governor every day of the week and twice on Sundays. He can be in the senate forever and will run for president again one day.

I agree. He probably regrets nothing. Hell, he already barely did his job during his first term and got re-elected anyway.

Why would Flawless Beautiful Marco Purple heart Purple heart Purple heart want to run for Governor? It's clear he really wants to be President, and only jumped back into the Senate race to remain relevant so that he could run against Hillary in 2020. Now, he'll have to wait until 2024, but it's pretty obvious that this is his intention.

If something happens (e. g. Trump resigns, is removed, or opts to not run for re-election, Rubio is an attractive VP pick for Pence, and an attractive VP should Pence be elevated to the Presidency.

Florida law would require Rubio to resign as Governor if he were to run for President.  As a Senator, he is exempt from that law.  Rubio lucked out big time in being able to get his Senate seat back.  What's more, Rubio gains more Foreign Policy gravitas by remaining a Senator.

Maybe a little, but I don't think he can regret it much. It's pretty transparent that Mitch had to get the entire caucus to beg him to run for the sake of keeping the seat and overall control of the Senate. I wonder what he does in 2022, especially if Gillum wins and Trump loses 2020.

I honestly think it would be too clear to voters that being governor would be a consolation prize for Rubio and they wouldn't elect him for that reason.

Didn't he miss the most votes out of any senator? It was pretty clear that senator was a consolation prize as well, and that didn't seem to matter, so...

Kerry, McCain, Hillary, and Obama all missed more votes as a percentage of the total amount when they were running.

Have you seen Rubio? He’s the exact type of politician who is designed never to go near executive power.

And let's dispel once and for all with this fiction that Marco Rubio actually wants to be President. He DOESN'T actually want to be President. (His corporate and RNC masters do).

Part of the problem is that removing DeSantis from the governor's race would just create a vacuum for a Trumpist candidate that would have to be filled by someone (Pam Bondi? Some eccentric businessman?). Rubio wouldn't be it and would arguably just cannibalize the non-Trumpist vote share with Putnam.

Before he was Senator, Rubio was Speaker of the FL House.  He KNOWS State Government and would be the most qualified candidate for Governor in all likelihood (in terms of what folks normally consider "qualificaitons").

He'd beat Gillum if he were the candidate this year.  Unlike DeSantis, Rubio knows something about State Government.
