I oppose this as I simply don't believe in banning plastic bags for many reasons.
1. Homeless and poor single parent families that can't afford cars use them to bring stuff home.
2. We can do a much better job with a recycling program and this doesn't take care of the waste already in the environment.

A bill that I made earlier this month will be coming up soon to clean up the environment. I ask all commons members to vote no on this one.

Hi friends!

Plastic is a major polluter, it kills a lot of wildlife, sea life, yadda yadda. Plastic bags are a big culprit in this and they’re EVERYWHERE.

This isn’t intended to solve all waste in Fremont, but it will stop a lot of future waste from being made. If this chamber so likes, we can help subsidize new bags for small business or the poorest among us.

Anyway, this gets us a step closer to saving the planet, and we can always amend.

Who's responsible for overseeing how many bags are being given to consumers?  I'm leaning strongly against this bill for now.  A thousand dollar fine per bag is ridiculous and would kill small businesses.

I'd strongly suggest amending the fine because it is indeed excessive, but I would support an amended bill.

So we have two bills on the floor right now that have opposite effects: this bill which outlaws plastic bags, and another bill which outlaws outlawing plastic bags.

If one of them passes, we may as well table the other bill.

After some consideration, I'd rather not waste the time of the House on an amendment sure of defeat. I would, however, like to question (and see the current opinion of my fellow MP) on the current subsidies - the 1 billion dollars for leather/fabric store bags - as placed by the bill.

Rather than dispute the principle (which I can agree with), isn't the amount a bit overblown? Or rather, would it cost that much? I'm actually curious.
