A 20-year old woman from Linz, Austria failed to buy Tender in a supermarket recently.

Not me of course, but Milka Tender, a chocolate bisquit.

The reason ?

The cashier wanted to see an ID, because certain Tenders contain small amounts of alcohol.

IMO ridiculous that supermarket chains require IDs for alcoholic chocolate products.

Her reaction:

I've always been told Europeans are a lot "cooler" when it comes to alcohol and young adults (at least when compared to Americans....we have a very weird relationship with alcohol and youth)...is that false or changin?

We are allowed to get hammered in the open street without encasing the bottle in a paper bag.

Your young people can drink in the streets or everybody can?  Like, all the time, everywhere?  That's weird.  Americans would abuse that freedom.

When I was a kid I had no problem buying stuff like this containing small amounts of alcohol. Once (me being 12) a teacher thought I just drank because it had pretty intense smell about it, while an actual amount was negligible.

I can only speak for my particular little corner of the world that having your first drink(s) while underaged (18 being legal age to buy alcohol and tobacco), is more common than not. I did this and most of the people I know had the same begginings. I probably drank more in my two senior years in HS and two first college years than ever since. I drink relatively little nowadays.

Polish laws about drinking in public places are weird. The courts declared Vistulan Boulevards in Warsaw free for drinking. A definition of a "public place" in this particular sense is fluid.

Funny thing is you can't walk with a can of beer or a bottle of something stronger and just take sips from it in public place, but if you have it hidden in, let say, a paper bag, the police can't question you.

It's actually kind of funny to go out drinking in open space and watch out for the police/municipal guard Tongue

I believe most Americans have their first drink before graduating HS too.  I don't know if most of my drinking came in HS and college, but certainly a lot of it did.  I just polled the family, wife was 13, I was 14, 3 kids were 16 and 1 at 15.  Alcohol is not a big deal in our house either.  Me and the wife have been drunk once in the last....idk, at least 3 years.

There are places like that in the US as well.  The French Quarter in New Orleans and all(?) of Las Vegas for two.  Probably others I don't know about.

I think that's the same here too.  At least that's how homeless people do it.

After reading the thread title, I opened it expecting to see an arraignment notice.

As mentioned, as long as you're drinking in a "to go" cup  you can drink wherever you please in New Orleans and environs.
