Well, this is some encouraging news perhaps. Trump's insane trade war needs to be stopped ASAP.  The clown seems to be putting actual data about the issue, and the effects of what he is doing, on "ignore," and it is going to hurt near everybody, both economically and from a foreign policy standpoint.

Trump is exhibit A as to why I favor the US going to a parliamentary system. Our system puts too many eggs in one basket. And Trump has morphed the basket into a Pandora's box.

Boo freaking hoo. They knew what they were getting into when they endorsed him for president. Actions have consequences.

Will we see any action?

Other countries have done an excellent job at targeting tariffs at Trump's rural base. Iowa is howling.

They’re a co-equal branch.
They should act like one. “Afraid of hurting a Republican President?” Screw you, you’re US Senators.

Conservatives should have seen the populist demagoguery and recoiled. Tariffs are taxes, and particularly odious taxes. The only rationale that I can see for them is that imports are luxuries in which most people don't indulge, and they are more easily taxed than traditional sectors of the economy (typically, subsistence farming). Donald Trump loves the voter who has low information, and with such voters one gets folly. Contrast Barack Obama, who did not yield to superstition and ignorance. (Low-information blacks and Hispanics defer to their own middle classes for information and guidance because of trust. Low-information white people have not trust of the white middle class whom they see as exploiters and abusers.

President Trump kicked the hornet's nest at first, but he kicked it in the direction of liberals who could easily hate the consequences. Lacking empathy as he does for anyone that he does harm to  while getting his way, he could ridicule liberals at every turn. Maybe his electoral coalition is beginning to unravel.

I am beginning to think that many Republicans delighted because liberals found Trump offensive to everything they believe in are beginning to wish that they had nominated someone else.

Exactly. I think these tariffs are stupid, but I'll still happily drink all the muh free market Republicans' tears over them.

This means absolutely nothing. They always talk about how they're concerned about how Trump's actions affect America, but in the end, they do nothing but step into line behind him. The tariffs is just another example of this. If they really were concerned, they would be pushing a bill to try and overturn the tariffs, but they won't.

This.

There have been bills (IIRC pertaining to DACA) that Congress could have passed Congress, but Mitch refused to do anything that the president wouldn't sign. That pissed me off to no end. Show him and the American people that you were willing to get things done. Pass it and put it on his plate. If he doesn't sign it, that's on him, not you.

The reality of the matter is that despite all their bluster, Congressional Republicans don't want to go against Trump, which is ridiculous. Congress is an equal branch of the government, not subservient to the president. So they are, by their inaction, agreeing with every move he makes. It's frustrating and disgusting.

This is one of the most glaring failures of our system of government that has become so much more apparent in the Trump era: Congress is not a viable "check" on the executive branch so long as the president is from the same party as that which controls Congress. Trump is currently stress testing the system to see just how much his party will put up with, and at this point, it's fair to say that there is almost nothing Trump can do to make them turn on him so long as he has the support of his base.

When you combine that with a number of other failures of our system, it really does make a strong argument that we need big reforms to the presidency and the way we choose/elect our representatives, because what we have now is not working and is dragging this country down as the government's ability to solve our biggest problems has been completely crippled.

I don't know why you're all so confident that GOP Senators wouldn't "act" against Trump's protectionism ... it's like the one thing they actually would defy him on.

They cant just pass a law , they need to pass it with 2/3 of both houses of Congress and likely their are enough Trumpist Republicans and Populist Left Democrats to stop that from happening .

Tears? With minimal effort, the Senators quoted in this article got exactly what they wanted: Flattering coverage in a political gossip rag, and nabobs people like Torie harrumphing about it.

They know that it will all be worth it when they confirm his newest justice to the Supreme Court.
