eh, normal would be the minority opinion since the majority of Americans don't want troops in Iraq any longer.

Uh, wrong.

Iraq should be split up.

Give me one reason why such an artificially created nation with absolutely no historical reason for its current borders should consist as one nation.

Yugoslavia didn't work, Iraq won't either.

A ww2 veteran told Neil Cavuto that we left Chile, El Salvador and Korea and they looked after themselves. why cant we leave iraq.

I think Koreans would be very surprised to hear you say we've left.  I think Chileans would be very surprised to hear there were ever 130,000 US Troops in their country.

I would be sorta inclined to say yes.

By December 2006, we will either have "won" in the sense that local forces can more or less look after things and we can leave, or we will have "lost" in the sense that it should be clear if the Iraqi's are not able to stand on their own.

I expect, even if we 'win" we would likely keep a few air bases in the region, just in case we need to blow up a reactor or two in Iran, but yes, by December 2006 things should be clear one way or the other.

That decision should be up to the elected Iraqi government. No one else.

I would hope the elected American government would also have a voice in the decision....

Absolutely not.  Leaving a mess would be infinitely worse than whatever casualties we suffer by making sure the job gets done.  If the job gets done...

I would say that the US should be the one to decide where the US army goes.

Yes, but with the caveat that we reinstate Saddam with abject apologies and reparations.

From what I remember, American etc. troops are now only in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi goverment (could be wrong though) and that the American government agreed to this.

While that is true, we have already committed to the fact that we would remain in place until the Iraqi forces are capable enough to defend themselves and/or when the Iraqi government asks us to leave.  So, since our position has been made, the next decision lies with the Iraqi government.
