Although the motive may be a good one, the measure strikes me as somewhat ridiculous.

Using government fiat (in this case, closing schools) to reduce public demand of a legal commodity, in this case gasoline, strikes me as anti-market, and just pretty damn creepy as well.

I could counterargue that the same is done for tobacco, casino gambling, concession stands in high schools, etc., every day, but I dislike all of those things as well, for the same reason.

I'll just agree that this idea is silly, and leave it at that. I don't live in Georgia.

Georgia Tech, however, is not closing, lol.

Further, I don't think schools have to close - it's more of a suggestion for schools to follow(at least the e-mail sent to me about Tech not closing seemed to indicate this).

He's closing the schools to save gas. Hmmmm, when everyone hears about this what do you suppose the first thing they're going to do is?

Nice work Sonny.

I actually like this. Not only because I'm a student, but also because it's about time institutions begin using their influence to cut gas. I think a better solution would have to been to say, cut buses for one week, but continue school and excuse students who bring in valid excuses.

This is a good move by Perdue, simply because it will reduce the amount of fuel being consumed and reduce the chance of shortages.

Better woudl be to go to a 4 day school week and add 90 minutes to the other four days.  Saves the same amount of fuel without reducing the amount of time students get in the classroom.
