What are your experiences with driving when it has -30°C outside ?

I'm asking because the Beast from the East will bring these unusual temps next week.

Driving is the same as it is at -10, just give your car another minute or two to warm up.

You'd better have a strong battery or else you're gonna be calling AAA a lot. Also, don't park the car on an empty tank.

I've at most a couple times driven at temps below -10 C, so no advice.

My uncle gave me a diesel liquid which helps you to start the motor when it's really cold outside.

But my concern is the battery of my car which is already 9 years old.

The worst I know is -22°C and I was able to start it then.

-30°C would be hard to say though.

Pro tip - turn your lights on and off instantly then start the car.  It throws a jolt of juice to the battery and helps it turn over faster.

That would be bad ...

Still, as a last resort, someone from the company can pick me up with a company car if my car won't work ... Tongue

One of my coworker's car once broke down and my boss quickly came to pick her up while the car was taken to the repair shop

If it's below -20, I usually wait about 5-10 minutes to heat up the car, especially in the morning.

I live in Alabama. I don’t have much experience with that. It’s 80+ degrees right now.

It only really gets down to about 0 F (-18 C) at the coldest, but in a typical season we only get down to about 15-20 F (-9 to -7 C), so I couldn't say.

I dunno...only had problems starting from cold once...replaced the battery soon after.  Most people in MN have a garage or a block heater.  Yes...”honey, did you remember to plug in the car?” Is already a thing in MN.
Block heaters and remote start...we are spoiled in this modern world.

I find what helps the most when driving in the extreme cold is to instead stay in bed and watch The Office.

Not even that modern. I learned to drive in MN in the mid '70's and block heaters were the norm then, too. We moved there in 1969 and after a year installed a block heater and a convenient outlet in the garage to plug it in. Decades later when I first heard about plug-in cars, it was hard not to visualize a car tethered to the outlet for its block heater.
