One of the most dramatic elections in the country have been shaping up in San Francisco. After incumbent mayor Ed Lee passed away in December 2017, Board of Supervisors President London Breed was sworn in as Acting Mayor.

Around a month after her ascendancy to the office, the Board of Supervisors narrowly and unexpectedly voted to remove her from office and replace her with Mark Farrell, District 2 Supervisor. Two moderates on the board crossed over to support the progressives in ousting London Breed as mayor, coordinated by allies of Mark Leno, a former Supervisor and State Senator running for mayor.

The board wished to remove Breed from office to deny her of an incumbency advantage, so that Mark Leno would have an easier shot at winning. The race at the start had London Breed and Mark Leno neck-to-neck, but a new poll released this week showed London Breed leading Mark Leno 2 to 1, meaning that the palace coup style removal of London Breed may have backfired and turned her into a strong frontrunner.

Basically, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors removed the city’s first black female Mayor from office and instilled a rich white male venture capitalist as interim leader, to help another white man win the mayor’s office, while claiming they were removing her from office because she was the puppet of another rich white male venture capitalist that they did not like. However, this this did not play out well at all in one of America’s most diverse cities and seems to making London Breed a sure-lock for re-election.

Uhh what is this racial take? Back when I was home (1 month ago admittedly) the race of the candidates wasn't really an issue. Rather it was that SF politics is heavily factionalised into personal camps and local issues like development. Politics is also "pyramid shaped meritocratic" so everyone wishes for the top job. Breed at the time seemed like a compromise candidate between the factions whp cpuld keep the ship running. She however was gaining popularity quickly, much quicker than a seatwarmer should. But even then, people were expecting a Leno push for the office in November.

I guess I should go and check up whats happening back home.

The racial take was very prominent, as the progressives brought up her race when removing her from office, albeit they said they were disappointed they had to replace a black woman who grew up in public housing with a rich white millionaire from Pacific Heights.

This wasn't about being progressive. Neither of them is progressive. It was about not having the same person having too much power by being both President of the Board of supervisors and mayor.  Of course the non progressives do everything they can to stop there from being a progressive mayor of San Francisco, whether it's assassinating a progressive mayor in 1978 so that Dianne Feinstein can become mayor, or Newsom delaying taking office as Lt. Governor in 2011 so that a more conservative board of supervisors picks his replacement.

Huh, I had no idea Breed had been removed, and I live in the Bay Area.

This seems a little shady to me, tbh. Will probably end up supporting Breed.

I had no idea that Ed Lee had died.  RIP.

Also, even though I'm closer politically to Leno, I would support Breed just because of the terrible treatment the Board of Sups gave her.

"They" did not do that, a single former supervisor did because he was upset about not being able to get his seat back. jfern is implying some sort of grand conspiracy.

IMHO - insane people have no place in ANY respected party. That applies both to alt-right and alt-left.

Many people have reported this post as a libel / slur and I agree it does cross a line of disrespect for those with opposing views to ascribe the motives of Milk's and Moscone's assassin to an entire class of voters. In lieu of deleting all posts referencing the slur I am leaving it up with a warning to ratchet down this rhetoric. --Mod.
