Somewhere in Iowa - its the first contest in the nation and Democrats have this fantasy that they're going to be able to compete in the White, rural Midwest again in 2020.

They'll be competing in Iowa since Trump will still be probably underwater there.

All of the first four primary/caucus states (Iowa / NH / Nevada / SC) will presumably have at least one debate at some point.  But since presumably compared to the 2016 Dem. race they're going to have more debates and start earlier this time (again, like the 2016 GOP debate schedule), then they might save those early primary state debates until closer to the primaries themselves.  In which case, the first debate will probably either be in a medium to large sized swing state (e.g., Wisconsin, North Carolina, Florida, etc.), or else a large non-swing state that has a lot of delegates, like California or New York.

Trump is not losing Iowa in 2020

Since there's going to be a lot of Senators running, I say go ahead and have it in D.C.  DAR Constitution Hall perhaps.
