The existence of the special election wasn't the problem.  Their candidate was.

Good point about the cost saving, though.

This is insane. What is a Senator dies a month after getting sworn in? The state would be deprived of elected representation for nearly six years.

It would be 2 years at most, at the next general election, the way a lot of states do it. Right now they have to call a special election promptly.

Most states, in fact. This is obviously the action of  sore losers, but lets not blow it out of proportion.

What are you talking about? Did they take away also the power of the governor to appoint an interim senator?

Because Republicans hate democracy and don't really see a problem with pedophilia (or misogyny).

This is a very dumb move politically. Republicans would win 9 out of 10 Senate elections if they allowed them to happen. They're going to regret this if there's ever a Democratic governor when a Senator dies or resigns.

I think Arizona has the best rule on this : Where the governor must appoint someone from the previously elected senator's party.

It's not just Arizona.
Wyoming and Hawaii have the same law.

After the candidate who could’ve been elected, they should be lucky that a special election happened and ended the way it did.

Most of Alabama's laws and its constitution have "sore loser" written all over it.  It's the geographical equivalent of a serpent backed into a corner, crying victim cuz it can't victimize people anymore.
