Why did Margaret Thatcher switch from Methodism to Anglicanism?

She was known for her Methodist background, but joined the Church of England as an adult.  Was this for reasons of political expediency and prestige (i.e. Tory elites seeing Methodism as "lower" than Anglicanism)?

Pretty much, yes. Her attitude to religion in general was quite odd though - she doesn't seem to have been particularly religious herself, but liked the idea of being so, or at least of seeming to be so, and was definitely shaped by a religious idea of moral certainty. Amusingly enough this general picture also holds true for Tony Benn, though o/c he maintained his tribal link to Nonconformity (and perhaps there's the fundamental difference between the two).
