I don't understand why left-socialist and anti-EU Melenchon is so popular. He's the left Le Pen.
I think you got it?
anti-EU sentiment isn't especially popular in France. Promising to leave the Euro was a part of why Le Pen underperformed so badly against Macron

That's right. Frankly I think had it not been for that and to a lesser degree her bad debate performance Le Pen would have got at least 40% of the vote (but she would have still lost).

I don't think it's that egregious for an American Democrat (hardly a bastion of social democracy) to back someone who wants to liberalize the French economy (and a president Fillon or Wauquiez would try to go much further than Macron).

The poll should end tomorrow night, but unless there's a last-minute vote surge, it's looking like the second round will be Emmanuel Macron (REM) vs. Jean-Luc Mélenchon (FI).

Macron is not right wing on economics, and I don't believe that anybody should be taxed more than 50%.

Whichever left of center candidate seems most likely to win, which right now seems to be Mélenchon.

So basically, precisely how the run-off should have been, if Hamon didn't split the vote.
