https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2017/12/mike-pence-almost-replaced-donald-trump-after-access-hollywood-tape.html

“Trump’s phone calls to his running mate reportedly went unreturned, and anonymous quotes began appearing in news stories describing Pence as “beside himself” over the revelation. … It’s been reported that Pence sent Trump a letter saying he needed time to decide whether he could stay with the campaign. But in fact, according to several Republicans familiar with the situation, he wasn’t just thinking about dropping out—he was contemplating a coup.”

Should be fun when Trump hears about this.

I liked what he did for religious liberty, but he's kind of creepy and he is leading a bloodless coup against Trump. Agree he is worse than Quayle.

Not surprised at all... what did I tell you people?

Yet for some reason everyone on Atlas who really hates is blind to this and thinks it's worth it for a President Pence. Hate to tell ya, but you'd be begging for an incompetent, unpopular and ineffective Trump within a month of a Pence Presidency.

I agree it's a tough question. Which bus driver do we want? The madman who is setting it on fire and wants to crash it, or the zealot who will drive us all right to a concentration camp?

In part I think it's 'better the devil you don't know', because Trump is so awful. And speaking for myself, at least with Pence there'd still be a bus to drive back home in a few years.

But really  they're only slightly differently awful. An actual solution is to defeat the Republicans utterly and reform the Dems. How practical it is, I don't know. I'm starting to think the bus is too damaged to ever get home.

I’m  surpirsed Pence would want Rice as his running mate since she is pro choice. I remember it being an issue when she was rumored to be Romney’s VP choice.

She's an unmarried black woman (and smart, too). Anyone who thinks the GOP would nominate her thinks the party consists entirely of Rockefeller Republicans, and has likely gone on an extended vacation from reality.

If there was ever a time when the GOP could pick Rice and not have it cause problems it would be when Trump resigns from the ticket in the middle of a campaign. It would probably have taken until about now before most of the country even noticed Rice was pro-choice.

It's no secret that Trump and Pence do not like each other so this doesn't surprise me.

I'm so sure that one of George W. Bush's main foreign policy architects would be a fantastic candidate for a Republican ticket. The Republicans should totally run on their record in the Iraq War days.

Better than Trump .

Im sure a George W Bush type Republican would be

1. A Much better President than Trump
2. More Popular Than Trump
3. More electable than Trump

Also Remember Bush was significantly more popular up until Katrina among the GOP base than Trump is now. Bush approval among Republicans was 96% in November of 2004 , and until Katrina rarely got below 88%.

I don’t see Condoleeza Rice appealing to trumps base. Plus it would have been harder to paint Hillary as hawk when you have one of the main advisors of the Iraq War on the ticket.

And part of Trump's appeal also to those secular working class voters, beyond trade, was his constantly criticizing the Iraq War. Many of these same voters butchered the Republicans in 2006 on that.

That too. The attack ads mentioning her 9/11 commission was testimony would be brutal. If Pence wanted a minority female on the ticket Nikki Haley is the obvious choice.
