Assuming Dick Gephardt somehow won the Democratic nomination in 1988, how would he have faired against Bush Sr, and what would the map look like?

He does much better than Dukakis and would have a decent shot at winning. I'll post a map when I get home.

I'm thinking a Gephardt victory map looks something like this:

275-263.

390: George H. W. Bush/Howard Baker - 54.3%
148: Dick Gephardt/Paul Sarbanes - 42.7%
Ron Paul/Ed Clark - 2.4%
Others - 0.6%

In Maryland, Lawrence Hogan narrowly beats Curt Anderson.

This map looks pretty similar to what I would have predicted, although I think that Gephardt would have won Michigan, while I think Vermont would have gone for Bush.

Dick Gephardt: 292 EV
George Bush: 246 EV
