Well gee, my Cub Scout troop were heathens then, since we let girls into the Pinewood Derby.

I never really understood why Venturing didn't just become the default thing you graduate into.

I hope the Girl Scouts win on this one. Their numbers are growing while the Boy Scouts are declining. In addition, while I wish they had some of the programming that the Boy Scouts had, in general now their programming is much more forward-thinking and more appropriate for today's children. I also probably would have never been a Girl Scout if it had been co-ed.

Generally the boys-only things go co-ed before girls only do. It happened with a lot of schools as well and also there is more pressure from the Title IX / equality / feminist forces to make male-only groups open to women/girls.

I reached Eagle Scout and got the letter from George HW Bush and Michael Dukakis - then still governor of MA. I also once made it to the regional finals in Pinewood Derby as a Cub Scout (my 2nd year doing it) This was well before they had kit cars for sale at Michael's and Home Depot. That particular car was pretty ugly as I remember.

An old friend from Scouts from my time has his sons in it too. His dad was the Scoutmaster. My dad sometimes went on the trips with us but never was a Scout leader. My friend who is a pastor does too. I have a daughter who is 11 and she was not interested in joining either Brownies or Girl Scouts so we never had to cross that bridge.

They should both be banned.

Very sad to hear the Boy Scouts of America are facing declining membership. I'll need to think of some other activity to force my hypothetical future children into.
