vs. Strom Thurmond/Ross Barnett

With Vice President Theodore McKeldin easily clinching the nomination over Senator Norris Cotton, Senator Barry Goldwater, Senator Goodwin Knight, and Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., none of whom seem to have made a serious bid, the Democrats nominate Stuart Symington. Symington and McKeldin both choose conservatives who are pro-civil rights as their running mates, though Norris Cotton is typically more to the left of Allan Shivers. Symington runs decidedly as more hawkish than the "modern man" Theodore McKeldin.

250: Stuart Symington/Allan Shivers - 43.0%
224: Theodore McKeldin/Norris Cotton - 40.4%
63: Strom Thurmond/Ross Barnett - 15.3%
Others - 1.3%

Minnesota, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, New York, Wisconsin, and Nevada are the closest states. Symington reaches an agreement with McKeldin and Cotton: McKeldin would become Secretary of the Treasury and Cotton would become Attorney General, and in exchange Shivers would be elected Vice President in the Senate, as well as U. N. Ambassador Ralph Bunche, HEW/Labor Secretary Anna Roosevelt Halsted, CIA Director Kermit Roosevelt Jr., and Defense Secretary Cornelius V. S. Roosevelt.
