Why not? He's a living human democrat and he's from Maryland!

In 2024, I could certainly see it. If he ran in 2020, he'd be outshadowed by several candidates.

I'd certainly be willing to vote for him, but I don't think it's quite his time yet. I like him a lot, he was a very effective representative and he's got just enough gall to try it. We'll see how he does in the senate a little more and then check back in for 2024 or 2028.

I think he's more of a senate critter. Wasn't he on the leadership track in the House? I expect him to do the same in the Senate.

I doubt he'd run in 2020, and even if he did, he'd be easy to portray as a Washington insider, since he's from Montgomery County, MD.

I would probably vote for him in a primary, unless if Sanders, Warren, Brown, Franken, or someone in that mold runs. I live in his former Congressional district and find him to be pretty good. He can unite both wings of the party; he's an establishment darling but has a very progressive voting record.

That's where the positives end. Being from the DC suburbs is too big of a hurdle to be a viable candidate; probably the worst place for a Democratic nominee to be from. Even though I like him, some other Berniecrats won't because he is quite hawkish and takes way too many big-money donations. He just can't piece together a strong enough coalition to have any shot in the primary, appealing to neither with minorities nor the white working class. His performance would be like that of John Kasich; he wins his home state and comes in 4th place everywhere else.

I just remembered something. Barrack Obama was from the so-called corruption center of Illinois, Chicago, and yet in his senate election in 2004 (and the '08 presidential election, to an extent), he won downstate counties in landslides by campaigning there after it was obvious he would win.. Provided, Van Hollen is already probably tarnished because he didn't make much effort to expand the Democratic coalition in Maryland to places like the eastern shore.

Van Hollen is a Clinton enemy who got incredibly lucky that she lost the election. So long as they continue to wield influence in the party, he isn't leaving that Senate seat.

That he's a Clinton enemy is a plus.
