Yeah, everybody could have seen this coming. I suppose they were still under the assumption that Hillary would be the next POTUS when they decided to do it in Hamburg, but even then you still would have been inviting atleast 8 very controversial people for an event which a lot of people see as the annual neoliberal fapfest in a very accessible German city.

This makes me furious. Disgraceful acts, committed by a bunch of thugs and losers.

I'm the last person who wants to restrict the right to protest, but this is unacceptable. But I'm not just angry at the rioters, I'm also angry at the police for allowing this to happen. They should have intervented earlier, with more force and with a zero tolerance strategy. Most of the rioters will probably get away with it, what is a total disgrace. The violent ones should go to jail and/or compensate the damages by non-profit work.

It's ironic though that many peaceful protest marches against the G20 summit have taken place in the past couple of days too and in their number of participants they have by far outnumbered the violent protests. In fact, there's a large-scale demonstration planned for today (supported by SPD, Greens, the churches, and a number of NGOs) which intends to protest both the G20 and violent anti-G20 protestors.

This shows, if you want to make international headlines, you need to set something on fire.

I wouldn't regard that as a solution and it probably would have led to exactly the same outcome.

The problem is, the phrase "violence begets violence" is certainly applicable to the current situation in Hamburg as well. For instance, there was a report (in reputable media) last night of a group of police officers beating a journalist who had taken photographs of them. Protestors who are robbing supermarkets and setting cars on fire certainly should be condemned. But you must also keep in mind that once the violence starts, police tends to overwhelm and maim everybody in sight without much differentiation whether it is a violent protestor or not. So, I'm the last person who would condemn police for exercising some restraint.

I haven't really a solution for that myself, except for the aforementioned proposal of not conducting such a summit in a city like Hamburg in the first place.

Two distinct demonstrations are marching through Hamburg today... the aforementioned moderate hero (well, more of a center-left) protest march, and a march of the radical left.

The more radical one, while also peaceful in its majority, could spiral out of control tonight again. It was actually peaceful up until a few minutes ago, but TV news are now reporting a about a minor incident with the police occurring there right now ("minor" compared to events of last night).
