Moderate Dems v. moderate Reps.   What happens in Virginia and Mass? (and in Indiana and Maine?).  How do you vote, how does the map look, and - who wins?

Funny, I was seriously thinking of posting this question with different running-mates.

Romney would only get the nomination if all the other Republican candidates were abducted by aliens.  If this happened, he'd lose in a Reaganesque landslide.  The map would look something like:

Warner/Bayh beats Romney/Snowe with 529 electoral votes.

Romney is from MASSACHUSETTS.  The Republican Party spent the 1988 and 2004 campaigns demonizing Massachusetts.  They've convinced so many people, ESPECIALLY Republican voters, that Massachusetts is a corrupt and lawless place where married gay couples are killing heterosexuals, abortions are performed at every street corner, and everyone has wild, orgasmic sex in the middle of the street.

Mitt Romney is stuck between a rock and a hard place.  He can talk about how great he was as governor, but that would mean praising his own state and the people in it, and that would be admitting that his party has been lying.  If Romney tries to uphold the negative stereotype about Massachusetts, then he's admitting that he was an ineffective governor and doesn't care about his constituents.  So far, he seems to be taking the latter approach.

Mitt Romney would only win Idaho and Utah and only because he's a Mormon.   I'm being generous in giving him Idaho, because he'd have to fight hard for it.

Olympia Snowe is too liberal to appeal to the heavily Republican states.

This Republican ticket is the worst of both worlds when it comes to getting votes.  Being from Massachusetts and having a moderate running mate instead of a wingnut won't sell in Mississippi or Alabama.  Having to either admit his party was lying or admit he was an ineffective governor would damage him among conservative, moderate, and liberal voters alike.  Romney wouldn't appeal to anyone.

Remember that Warner and Bayh are moderates, not liberals.  So the conservatives don't have a clear choice, even without Romney's baggage.

If Romney were running against a liberal Democrat, he'd do better but that's not saying much.  He'd add Missisippi, Alabama, South Carolina, the Great Plains, Wyoming, and Alaska, but that's about it.

I thought I would post a map as utterly ridiculous as yours.
