Tim Ryan's already tried to challenge Nancy Pelosi for Minority Leader in the House...could he run, and how successful would he be?

He doesn't have a shot IMO.  He won't get enough cash to mount a viable campaign.

A mere Representative usually doesn't have enough status to be on a national ticket unless he/she is in leadership.  Ryan's from Ohio, but he's from the most Democratic part of Ohio and not a swing area, so it's not going to help that much.

A congressman from the minority party would have a hard time raising his profile enough.

His main demographic advantage is that he's a midwestern under 50, but that's not going to help him stand out (Seth Moulton in contrast has an impressive military record.) His books on mindfulness and The Real Food Revolution aren't going to get primary voters to run his way.

The situation could change if he finds a way to become a significant Trump critic, or a major voice on policy (the Paul Ryan approach eight years ago.)

Maybe if he runs for higher office soon, he'll be viable farther into the future. But nobody knows who he is now, and he's nothing special, so he's not really viable for 2020...

I'd say if Jim Clyburn retires in 2018 and he's elevated to Whip/Asst. Dem Leader, then maybe his odds improve slightly, but I highly doubt it.

I like him. I wish he would run but I suspect he will try to work his way up in the House. Perhaps make a more serious go for leader if and when Pelosi ever steps down.

If he runs for president, I don't think he would have much of a chance. Not because he's boring though. A White mid-westerner might have been boring 20 years ago but now he'd actually be an oddity in the Democratic field. Sadly too odd. I don't think a White man can win the Democratic nomination.
